Edit Did You Know? During World War I Jung was drafted as an army doctor and soon made commandant of an internment camp for British officers and soldiers.
Swiss neutrality obliged the Swiss to intern personnel from either side of the conflict who crossed their frontier to evade capture.
Jung worked to improve the conditions for these soldiers stranded in neutral territory; he encouraged them to attend university courses.

Quotes [ first lines ] Carl Jung : [ to his new patient ] Good morning I'm Dr. The author lost my trust when he declared that Freud is excellent in theorizing — the man gave me the exact opposite impression during my reading, like a Proteus that shapeshifts under the reader's nose.
Unless one keeps track of it, catches it and interrogates it, it shall not tell the divine truth but instead escape their attention through the maze of words, similes and literary structures.
In fact, a careful reader would realize that the author focused very little on the theoretical shifts of Freud's, to the extend that he sometimes forgot that Freud had been curing people throughout the time, and that if psychoanalysis is really as politically-and-theoretically dictated as he was indicating, the patients just won't play ball and Freud would be left starving.
The accusation of the absence of scientific rigor and a methodology, for those who know this area, is laughable. Both Freud and Jung acknowledge the fact that different patients called for different treatments.
Data and instruction handbooks would be useless in psychoanalysis. Moreover, the author made an unintended confession in the end that he saw political struggle revolving around the psychoanalytic society and the institutionalization of psychoanalysis as the sole cause for the eventual break-up between Freud and Jung.
He has quoted, in his book, remarks from both men that this is not the ultimate reason. The one who liberates Freud could never get along with the one who legislates Jung.
As Jung himself has correctly commented, put two saints with two different virtues benevolent vs. Still, I applaud to John Kerr's effort.
The scope of his archeology is vast and couldn't have been carried out without candid enthusiasm. Psychology is endopolitics: a revision of Jungian theory in Giambattista Vico's manner may well be a "labours in the depths" that most might find "too uncomfortable for their taste".
But in the name of Sabina Spielrein, it has to be done. May 26, Maite rated it it was ok. I am someone who studied psychoanalysis for a very long time, so of course, I'm very familiar with most of what is said in this book, and the events that the author wanted to research and talk about.
But it was a really difficult and long read to me, mostly due to the fact that he is a poor writer, it's very difficult to read more than a couple of pages at the time.
And he is unable to decide if he is writing a nonfiction book or a fictional one. While he does a lot of researches and uses that t I am someone who studied psychoanalysis for a very long time, so of course, I'm very familiar with most of what is said in this book, and the events that the author wanted to research and talk about.
While he does a lot of researches and uses that to form a narrative, what he cannot find he just goes on with what he thinks must have happened or what he thinks motivates the people he is talking about, and that to me is just plain fiction.
Added to that, he is someone who clearly doesn't understand psychoanalyses, and all his attempts to explain the theory are just ludicrous. He doesn't understand what it means, or even how it's viewed today.
I knew nothing about him before picking up the book but it becomes clear to me that he is a North American man.
What I do like about all of this is that he talks a lot about Sabina Spielrein, who is very rarely remembered; and that this mess became a movie who understands a lot more what the movement meant and means today than this man could ever understand.
Oct 29, Diana rated it liked it. If you ware interested in the history of our understanding of the human mind or women in academia and science then I recommend this book, but with the caveat that you will have to put up with unjustified pretensions and blunders.
Oct 22, Val rated it liked it Shelves: group , non-fiction. This book is about the development of psychoanalysis and not about whether Sabina Spielrein had kinky rumpy-pumpy with Carl Jung.
It is not the book of the film. It does include Sabrina's memory of her father spanking her brother and her fantasies about him also spanking her, as this was written up as one of Jung's test cases.
It is not clear whether the father ever actually spanked his daughter as well as his son. There are a lot of test cases, with several of the doctors analysing themselves a This book is about the development of psychoanalysis and not about whether Sabina Spielrein had kinky rumpy-pumpy with Carl Jung.
There are a lot of test cases, with several of the doctors analysing themselves and each other as well as their patients.
There are also issues of friendship, loyalty, rivalry, the ownership of intellectual property and the necessity for a reproducible, quantitative technique before a scientific idea is to be taken seriously.
The dilemma, if you are a scientist or want to be considered one , is that to develop the idea you need to talk to others who understand it, but you want to own that idea and are reluctant to share it.
I agree completely with the authors comments on this particular subject in the Afterword. The book is well written, informative, detailed and interesting.
It does assume some knowledge of the subject, but is suitable for the interested layman. There are lots of extracts from papers, journals, letters, etc.
There are a lot of characters, not just the three mentioned in the subtitle. The main focus, however, is on the friendship and rivalry between Freud and Jung and also to give more prominence to Spielrein's contribution to the development of psychoanalysis and the eventual divergence of the two men's theories.
The book's verdict on whether there was a sexual relationship? Maybe, probably not, we will never know, it doesn't matter.
But wow is it an ugly story. The sheer amount of research that had to be involved in writing this must have been astounding. The author Kerr must have had walls covered in post-it notes as he trails detective like three people through the changes of psychiatry into psychoanalysis during the early s.
I was fascinated and horrified as he tells their stories. I don't think I've ever seen a clearer image of historical Europe at that time, and it makes totally clear how completely the wars turned civilization tragically upside down.
It explains all kinds of cultural aspects of that time that I have never seen in print anywhere else. And it does not make any of the main players look good.
Freud was a dogmatic suspicious and bitter old man. Jung was a womanizing ass focused on his navel.
Spielrein was so idealistic and foolish, it is occasionally really painful just reading about it. The two men ended up destroying possibilities as they jockey for control of psychoanalysis, and Sabrina gets jettisoned off not just the ship but clear off the page of the history concerned with psychology.
This is a monster of a book, huge and detailed and well written, full of dark ugly things. Very educating. Feb 19, Carl rated it liked it.

A hard book to read but worth it in bringing the beginnings of Modern pyschoanalysis to light and re-humanizing two of the giants of the field back into what we all are- flawed fully human beings.

Yet the most important aspect, still, of psychoanalysis remains to this layman the art of listening. So many of us don't listen anymore-to our bodies, each other, God.
Give yourself plenty of time with this book. But one caution-do not expect to be any clearer about sex. Won't happen. Jun 21, Jonathan rated it really liked it.
Mixed feelings. Very smart. Unusually balanced in its appreciation of the strengths of psychoanalysis and critique of its weaknesses.
The afterword is excellent, really thoughtful. On the other hand, too much of it is devoted to the well known story of the rise and fall of the friendship between Freud and Jung.
Not much new here, though the story underscores how juvenile Freud could be in his relations with colleagues, and what a colossal error he made in insisting that deviations from his theor Mixed feelings.

What is relatively unknown is Spielrein. Fascinating figure, but the documentation is thin, and probably always will be. We will never known how much she could have contributed in the absence of sexism and Nazis.
Enright A bizarre but challenging story. This was my first time to be introduced to such feelings, information and facts! Excellent history of psychiatry, Dangerously amazing!
Usually, I should say normally those feelings we start to discover them at the age of teenage years not around 3 or 4! But strange things happen sometimes… Jan 21, Elizabeth Holter rated it liked it.
Fascinating look at the personalities of Freud and Jung, and at the place and time and milieu which gave us their theories. Reads like a PhD thesis - a very well written one- but the rigorous documentation used to bolster the story and the conclusions gets in the way of a "good read," and gives the book a tedious, repetitive feel.
Worth it for the reader who wants to better understand the way ideas germinate and spread. Three stars may be a little low for the amount of information and education Fascinating look at the personalities of Freud and Jung, and at the place and time and milieu which gave us their theories.
Three stars may be a little low for the amount of information and education presented and the way it was written, but I didn't love the book as much as I endured the process of getting to the end.

Many of the author's premises stretched and then broke the bounds of believability, such as Spielrein being the model for Jung's concept of the Anima.
It took me far too long to finish this book. Not because it wasn't interesting, but because I could only listen to it on my home laptop.
I really should know better than to listen to non-fiction, I can never process it the way I can when I read it on the page.
I feel like I needed more info on Freud and Jung's theories so that I could see how they differed later in their relationship.
Perhaps this was a difficulty due to listening. I will likely read this book at some point in the future to see It took me far too long to finish this book.
I will likely read this book at some point in the future to see what I missed on the first go round. A mighty tome, in detailed academic style by an author who obviously accepts as a matter of course, some of the more hard core aspects of psychoanalytic theory.
Sometimes he remembers that these are only his opinions and sometimes not! Far more about Jung and Freud than Spielrein partly due to the lack of primary sources available, I guess.

Sigmund Freud. Jung is eventually able to meet Freud himself, they, based on their enthusiasm, who develop a friendship driven by their lengthy philosophical discussions on psychoanalysis.
Actions by Jung based on his discussions with another patient, a fellow psychoanalyst named Otto Gross, lead to fundamental changes in Jung's relationships with Freud, Sabina and Emma.
Those relationships are also affected by Freud's unbending views of psychoanalysis and its use, by Sabina's growing self-awareness of what drives her emotionally, regardless of their negative root causes, and by Emma's feelings of guilt over not being able to produce a male heir for her husband.
Manic, feral, and desperate, Sabina Spielrein arrives at Carl Jung's Burghölzli psychiatric clinic in Zurich circa , hoping to calm her violent fits of hysteria.
By using his idol Sigmund Freud 's innovative methodology and theories, Jung not only manages to succeed but also he unlocks Sabina's intelligent nature, even though he has never met the famous psychoanalyst in person.
Nearly two years later when the three of them finally meet in Vienna, a complex corporeal affair will disturb the fine balance of things, as Sabina comes between the two men.
Who can escape his most fervent intimate desires? A Russian woman, Sabina, enters a psychiatric hospital in Zurich with a typical case of hysteria.
She undertakes a new course of treatment with Dr. Carl Jung, which involves word association and dream interpretation. Patient and doctor become attracted to each other.
