Once they arrive at the docks, their tour guide, Jim, arms himself with a revolver and they set off. After failing to catch any fish on the usual route, Jim suggests going deeper into the swamps.

While in a small clearing, Lee spots something through her camera and alerts Grace, but later finds nothing. Suddenly, the boat capsizes, dumping the occupants into the water; this kills Jim instantly, for some reason, and his body floats away.

Adam realizes a crocodile attacked them and helps Grace into a nearby tree. He searches the water for Lee, who got tangled up in ropes underneath the boat.

Grace sees the beast nearby and convinces Adam to come back. Lee frees herself, but the beast swims after her.

She manages to climb atop the boat, but the beast thrashes the boat in an attempt to throw her off. Adam and Grace distract it, and it swims away.

Realizing they can use the boat's ropes to pull Lee to safety, they attempt to execute this plan, only for the boat to get stuck. A hesitant Lee's forced to swim across and makes it despite panicking halfway across.

The girls suggest waiting for help, but Adam claims no one saw them leave, so Grace tries climbing the trees back to the mainland.

However, she's forced to swim back. An impatient Adam goes for the boat. He successfully overturns it, but the beast kills him. The girls make numerous attempts to continue his plan, only to be thwarted at every turn.

The next day, they decide the boat's a lost cause and attempt to use the trees to get out of the clearing again.

The beast attacks them, forcing them back to their original tree, though Grace suffers a nasty bite to her thigh in the process.

Because of heavy bleeding, her condition worsens over time. Lee tries once again to reach the boat, but gets pulled underwater and knocked unconscious.

She later finds herself on a very small island alongside Jim's body. She patches herself up, takes his revolver, and attempts to kill the beast; only the gun fails to work due to being jammed with mud.

She tries to lure the beast in using Jim's detached arm as bait and holding the pistol ready to fire at it when it comes for the snack but it refused to show itself.

She flees, with the beast close behind. It launches a sneak attack when she stops, but Lee manages to get the gun working and kill it.

The threat averted, she makes her way back to Grace, who has died from her injuries. Lee mourns her sister as she places her on the boat and paddles out of the mangrove.

The location representing the vast mangroves system in northern Australia was actually in the directors' home town of Sydney , 25 minutes from the Central business district In a small suburb called Oatley.

They also spent a week in Darwin shooting footage of real saltwater crocodiles that were transplanted into the location along with the actors, with the directing team doing their own CG special effects to achieve this.

Black Water received positive reviews from critics. Neil Smith of Total Film Magazine also praised the ending stating it was "a conclusion that refreshingly refutes the genre rulebook.

It's tense, gripping, scary and our characters have some depth to keep us engaged on their ordeal. Add a claustrophobic setting and an invisible enemy and you could've had something special if it wasn't for the dead moments that show up.

Nov 25, Black Water never stood a chance of coming off better than Rogue in my eyes, but that's more my being a prick full of preconceived ideas than the fault of the film.

Black Water's another human-munching croc movie, which we are of course in no short supply of. What I like about Black Water is that even though it's not about a giant croc like Rogue, Primeval, the Lake Placid series or Crocodile, it gets massive props for taking the route of Maneater and using a genuine fucking beast in the film.

A real crocodile goes wondering around and eating people? Way crazier than CGI or a rubber puppet.

It's clear that Andrew Traucki and David Nerlich directors along with whomever the other kids behind Black Water might have been were severely lacking in the funds department, so they rely on suspense more than anything, sometimes painfully so.

Suspense is my favourite type of horror, I'm one of those few people who thinks that the longer it takes to say something the better in films only mind you, not IRL.

Black Water comes dangerously close to crossing the line with me and ending up boring, but misses it by the narrowest of margins and comes back in line with some great jump scares of the laugh-out-loud kind and plenty of blood.

Though I doubt they could've gotten any more than the 89 minutes running length out of it than they did. Yet another one we've brought out that insists on sticking to the "Based on true events" claim.

Sure go on, maybe it works and you'll earn a little extra lolly, but I could make any film set anywhere with any amount of people doing anything I wanted and then put a crocodile in it and say "Oh, it's based on a true story, 'cause there's a crocodile in it, and in real life, crocodiles exit, so yeah Exhibiting precisely zero naked teenage girls running around screaming was quite a nice change of pace, making the film pleasurable in a "no cheese" kind of way.

I like the way that both Black Water and Rogue focus more on the idea of a mostly unseen predator picking people off while the people are at one another's throats to be much more provocative than the stupendously lame events of one-by-one death in Lake Placid and Mega Shark VS Crocosaurus.

Black Water might not be for everyone, but it stands quite loftily somewhere in the upper-middle amongst all the other Monster Movies and Creature Features out there, as one of the few serious ones that's still to some extent genuinely enjoyable.

The acting really surprised me as everyone especially the two female leads gave it their all and I'm talking about The Descent all out and made the whole ordeal raw and effective especially good when it's based off of a true story.

It takes place in one location as three vacationers get stranded when their boat gets flipped over in crocodile infested waters of australia and from there on it's a fight for survival and brings the terror from Jaws back to the waters.

This director is one to look out for as he has two successful and scary creature features under his belt with The Reef and now Black Water, man he is on a roll so far and I hope he continues because he is one taleted director of this genre and he knows how to build up the tension and suspense without showing too much or relying too much on CGI and every horror director should learn from him, this guy deserves his big break and check.

His two films ends very similar and on a bleak note but quiet and haunting and I'm very surprised that his films are not getting that much recognition or praise and sure the story isn't anything that breaks new grounds but the terror and raw simplicity makes the film rise up above most horror films of today and it deserves credit, this one will leave you chilled to the bone.

Overall Black Water is a solid and effective little creature feature one horror viewing that shouldn't be put off but a must see for any fans of Rogue, Jaws or creature features in general.
