Russell owns the screen as a middle-aged sheriff, the man can act. Richard Jenkins also does a great job portraying a tired, grieving deputy who only has his job because he's friends with the sheriff, but is willing to do his best at it all-the-same.
The interplay between Jenkins and Russell gives depth to their characters you don't expect in this type of movie. Wilson did well as a determined husband, though his character was a little one-note.
Fox's character is meant to be somewhat unlikeable, but still has some depth and even a spark of decency to him in the end.

This movie took the time to actually develop the characters. Four men go on a long and dangerous journey to rescue a woman and deputy from a clan of cave dwelling natives, knowing that they have little chance to succeed.
On the way they battle the elements in an uncharted and unmapped western frontier and bravely continue through the unforgiving landscape.
The movie contains humor, adventure, drama, romance, and yes, horrific violence for those who are squeamish. In fact, the scene most reviewers are talking about is pretty difficult to watch and for those of you that have a hard time with that kind of thing should definitely avoid this movie.
But it is certainly horrifying and spine tingling, which is apparently what the director was going for. This film is excellent for anyone who grew up with Westerns, but enjoys modern film elements.
The majority of the film follows amazing western tropes like a ragtag group of men from different walks of life adventuring together towards a common goal.

Every aspect of the film is first rate. Savages butcher a stable-hand and then follow a thief into a small town where they kidnap the 'thief', the lady Doctor and Sheriff's Deputy.
A team is put together to locate the Indians and on route they have several 'mishaps'. There is graphic, detailed violence depicted throughout the film, be warned!
Attention to detail in most cases is incredible. Kurt Russell has made many films over the years, I guess most people have seen the OTT film Big Trouble in Little China, however he has made many hard hitting and gritty films my favourite western being Tombstone.
This film is one that is full of gritty period realism and horror elements in a tale of abduction, murder and cannibalism. Russell plays Sheriff Franklin Hunt small-town lawman taking on a tribe of primitive cannibals in their own domain, a powerful performance by the veteran actor.
And it's good! I'm not sure if it deserve 4 stars, but what the hell. I love this rejuvination of westerns recently, and Bone Tomahawk is definently something entirely else!

The plot of the movie is fairly basic and easy to follow. A quiet little western town suffers a series of murders and kidnappings at the hands of some terrifying cannibals.
Kurt Russell and company take it upon themselves to retrieve those who were kidnapped. Those looking for a terrifying splatter movie as advertised might be a little disappointed.
The vast majority of Bone Tomahawk is the development of characters on their journey and very little action or horror.
By that, I mean it's kind of uneventful and slow. On the bright side, the dialogue is very well done.
I found that each of the four main characters brought a lot of personality to their given roles with the interaction between them on their journey is more than entertaining.
The film does pick up on the last quarter or so and this is where its reputation comes from. This portion of the film is highly entertaining and it IS as gory as people make it out to be.
But it's not the meat of the story. As a film, the Bone Tomahawk features some beautiful set pieces and shines as a technical achievement.
The environments the characters traverse looks beautifully golden and brown. On their journey out, Arthur blows the tribesman's whistle, and with no response, they continue to exit.
At a distance from the cave, they hear three gunshots, implying that Sheriff Hunt had killed the remaining men of the tribe.
Chicory acknowledges the gunshots with a half-hearted smile and tosses aside the rock he had been carrying as a weapon. Tired, hurt, and with few supplies, the three begin the journey home.

It's a very clear and extremely sharp disc. It makes for a fantastic viewing in terms of visual quality. Bone Tomahawk is in my opinion a very good movie.
