The downside is that it becomes, at times, too serious for its own good and more than a little preachy. There's a one-step-forward, one-step-back tendency that gives the film a shaky feel, and the sketchy animation doesn't do much to alleviate that feeling.
The backdrop is usually good, but the human characters have an overstuffed quality about them; you get the feeling they'd ooze some sort of gelatinous goo if punctured.
The Terrians fare somewhat better. While it's true that they resemble the spawn of an illicit affair between alien and tadpole, they are, at least, individual alien-tadpole hybrids with impressive facial nuances.
It's wise to keep in mind that this is not a mega-budget Pixar film, and isn't going to look like one. The good news is that Battle for Terra's moments of unbalance ultimately right themselves into a surprisingly earnest, engaging film.

Finally, as the Terraformer is close to completing its objective, Jim realizes that annihilating the Terrians is morally wrong, and also by seeing an angered Mala and Stewart fighting each other after Stewart shot down Senn, who's also part of the Terrian resistance and turns his ship towards the Terraformer and attacks it.
As his ship is damaged with anti-aircraft defensive fire, Jim fires his air-to-air missiles at the Terraformer's command module, destroying it, and killing a disappointed, betrayed Hemmer.
While Mala, Giddy and Stewart barely escape the resulting explosion, Jim's ship is destroyed in it and he dies peacefully, knowing he did a heroic deed.
An epilogue shows what happened in Terra some time later. The Terrians and the humans agree to live in peace. With the Terraformer destroyed, the Terrian atmosphere becomes safe once again for the aliens.
The Terrians create a sanctuary for the human colonists to live in, with an Earth-like atmosphere. In the human sanctuary, a large statue of Jim is under construction, in honor of his memory and sacrifice, much to Mala, Senn who had survived Stewart's attack , Giddy and Stewart's comfort.
Roadside Attractions handled theatrical marketing in North America and used its business relationship with Lionsgate to open the film wide in the United States.
Battle for Terra received uncharacteristically little marketing for a wide release film. The television campaign consisted of a small number of television spots on Cartoon Network and a handful of network television ads in select markets.
Awareness for the film on its opening weekend was subsequently little to non-existent. This strategy of having a disproportionately small advertising campaign for a wide release was employed only one other time a year earlier with the film Delgo.
