The big problem with this movie is that while Chris Evans the Narrator and Michelle Monaghan Her have good chemistry as actors, the characters that they are playing are reprehensible and unlikable.
He's a cad that uses women as objects for his pleasure including his friend, Mallory , and she's a cheater that fools around with Evans' character despite being engaged to another man.
How can I root for two people like this? Also, the screenplay doesn't develop the characters enough. He hardly even has any lines. I think the relationship between Mallory and the Narrator could have been developed more.
We just know that Mallory Aubrey Plaza is secretly in love with the Narrator, he rejects her, and she decides to date some creepy guy instead.
It just goes nowhere. The film has talented actors but the problem is the poorly written script that gives us no one to identify with. See all reviews.
Top reviews from other countries. This film is quite different from the usual romantic comedies. It was very modern with realistic lead characters.
I really enjoyed the "French cinema" vibe that the film gave off such as interjecting some scenes with animation and skits showing inside the mind and imagination of the leading man.
It's also not particularly 'sappy', there were plenty of real life events and interactions that ensured this wasn't a soft focus film.
It's predictable of course, but still entertaining. I also thought the soundtrack was pretty good and ended up buying a few of the songs that featured in the film.
I don't think the film has the pretentiousness that others have mentioned. The film is shot from the view point of the lead male, who is a writer, it's his story, his imagination and his life that is under the camera so when the credits roll and he breaks the 4th wall it makes sense to me.
But others may disagree. Overall, this isn't a life changing film but it's interesting enough and easy to have on for a relaxed movie night in.
Did not like this film story and characters very disappointing and hard to believe or follow. Turned it off after 30 minutes. One person found this helpful.
A delightfull film. Unfortunatly the DVD kept jamming in the second half. Good film, great delivery. Love this film!!!

I found it very dull, empty, and difficult to watch and would not recommend it. Although it features some of my favorite actors, I still only give it 2 stars.
I enjoyed it. It's a coming of age story about young adults The movie creatively addresses a variety of issues that can challenge us to be honest with ourselves and others.
I like the message, that we have to be willing to take emotional risks to live and love fully. And I like the how the value of being willing to open our hearts, despite the possibility of being rejected or abandoned, or just having to deal with the messiness of emotional attachments, is portrayed in several relationships.
As described, the humor is sometimes dry, and the movie is a little offbeat at times. Overall, I really enjoyed it I'm angry with myself for giving up 40 minutes of my life watching talented actors waste their skill on meaningless tripe.
