As revenge, Ripley suggests to Minot that he might try to convince Trevanny to commit the murders.
To ensure that the plan will work, Ripley starts a rumor that Trevanny has only months to live, and suggests that Minot fabricate evidence that Trevanny's leukemia has worsened, though Minot does not.
Trevanny, who fears his death will leave his wife and son destitute, accepts Minot's offer of a visit to a medical specialist in Hamburg. There, he is persuaded to commit a murder in exchange for money.
After carrying out the contract—a shooting in a crowded U-Bahn station—Trevanny insists that he is through as a hired gun. Minot invites him to Munich , where he visits another doctor.
Minot persuades Trevanny to kill a Mafia boss, this time on a train using either a garrotte or a gun. Trevanny reluctantly gives in and gets on the train.
He resolves to shoot the mafioso and commit suicide before he can be caught, asking Minot to ensure that his wife gets the money.
But before Trevanny can go through with it, Ripley, feeling guilty about getting Trevanny into the situation, shows up and executes the mafioso himself.
He asks Trevanny not to tell Minot that he has "assisted" with the assassination. Trevanny's wife Simone discovers a Swiss bank book with a large sum in his name and starts to suspect that he is hiding something from her.
She links the rumor about her husband's condition to Ripley and asks Trevanny to tell her how he has been making so much money.
Trevanny is unable to explain it to her and asks Ripley to help concoct a credible story. Ripley acknowledges his role in Trevanny's dilemma and promises to shepherd him through the ordeal.
The Mafia become suspicious of Minot's involvement with the murders and bomb his house, prompting him to flee. Ripley begins to fear Mafia revenge when he receives a couple of suspicious phone calls.
After sending Heloise and their housekeeper away, Ripley asks Trevanny to help him deal with any Mafia reprisals at Belle Ombre.
When two Mafia hitmen turn up at Belle Ombre, Ripley kills one and forces the other to phone his boss in Milan and say that Ripley is not the man they are after before being executed.
Simone then shows up at the house demanding answers, discovers the corpses, and is sent away in a taxi. Ripley and Trevanny drive to a remote village to burn the corpses in their own car.
A few days later, Ripley visits Trevanny's house, where a quartet of Mafia gunmen appear. One of them opens fire on Ripley, but Trevanny steps in front of him and is mortally wounded; he dies in Ripley's car on the way to hospital.
Ripley is unsure whether Trevanny's action was by accident or design. A few months later, Ripley encounters Simone in Fontainebleau, and she spits at him.
He realizes that Simone has accepted her husband's blood money, and in doing so has remained silent about her suspicions of Ripley's instigation of the entire affair.

Ennio Morricone - In Concerto - Ripley's GameMalkovich does the same thing, but Malkovich has the icy cool stare and way of speaking that makes him the embodiment of Ripley.
Malkovich just has this way of saying his dialouge, which I might add is great. There's some lines that a lot of actors couldn't do, Malkovich thrives on them.
The whole cast is great. As I said, there's no relation between either film. There's not even a scene where Ripley reminisces Despite that, looking at this as both a sequel and stand alone film it works.

A darker story too, and one handled well by the director here. Keeping things contained and concerned only with the main plot and its surprises, we see a completely innocent 'victim' of the stone cold Ripley become a darkly competent and enthusiastic contract killer.
Scott delivers this effect well, and Winstone jabs in his usual spike of menace as the dodgy small time crimelord who dares to mix with the likes of criminal mastermind, Mr Ripley.
Malkovich is breathtakingly comfortable in the role as art loving, sophisticated master fraudster and killer, Tom Ripley, and makes the movie a joy to watch.
One or two scenes are incredibly darkly comic, almost Macabre, as an ice cool, laid back Mr ripley takes on his duties as cold blooded murderer just as casually as a janitor would hoover the hallway and turn off the lights.
It makes the movie a memorable one, and I do not care one jot myself, how this hangs with the more celebrated Minghella made movie, or even how well it reflects the books, as this neat and original little thriller is a quiet little cracker of a film, one that gets better with each viewing too.
I prefer it to the more famous film and I think it is one of the very best movies of the noughties so far. A good sequel, with John Malkovich doing what he does best as the villain, he plays an older Ripley, also features Ray Winstone and Dougray Scott who do a decent job.
You get to see more of Italy, but this time the beautiful North. I didn't realize that l had seen this movie, when l ordered it. I must have seen it soon after was released, ten years ago.
Then as now l would have viewed it because it's a Patricia Highsmith adaptation. I seem to remember being disappointed with "Ripley's Games", because l thought that l was going to see a sequel to the "Talented Mr Ripley ".
In a sense it is sequel, the plot and the character have moved on and so have l. My partner and l viewed both films over the Xmas holiday and both films had a greater impact than l anticipated they would.
I haven't read book of "Games ", yet, but as with the "Talented" the movies inject a moral dimension , which is in many ways more anarchistic and morally relativist than the books.
Ripley is not just an arty psychopath, but a catalyst who provides a disturbing mirror in which our values and perceptions are reflected.
As he kills his way through the plot.. It's beautifully shot , constructed and dressed , In some ways it's not a sequel, It's a kind of stand alone to "talented", even though it's made afterwards, and uses Highsmith's characters.
But with in both films the directorial influence and the balance of the screenplay produces both a reflective and different take on Highsmith's Ripley.
When l first saw it. I wasn't impressed. This time l was, and l can recommend it. In this, his second screen outing, Ripley is played with aplomb by the charmingly sinister John Malkovich with strong support from Messrs Winston and Scott.
Ripley is a completely different animal to his previous incarnation in "The talented Mr. Ripley", but then again he would be this being 40 years on.
Gone are the homo-erotic tendencies replaced by a character who has grown into his own skin and who has reconciled himself to his true nature.
So what we have is a great leading man playing a great character with a strong supporting cast enacting a compelling story set in some very pleasant locations.
What's not to like? John Malkovich leads an excellent cast in an absorbing thriller based on the Patricia Highsmith novel.
