Your bakery will certainly be renowned worldwide, if I do say so myself. He stopped laughing all of a sudden, as though overcome with some digestive distress.
At last he burst forth with a wall-rattling belch. Most ungentlemanly of me! I had taken an immediate liking to Herr Zeppelin.
The feeling seemed to be mutual, as he invited me to a tour of his factory, with dinner at his house to follow. All the men who worked there had full bellies and seemed quite pleased with the work they did.
Zeppelin admired his building with a smile, his thick barrel chest puffed out with pride seemingly ever more with each thing he showed me.
Our tour concluded with a beer tasting in his office. Quaff it down, man! Never had I drank a beer so heavy and rich. It was almost like eating an entire four-course dinner!
And it was so foamy and bubbly that it almost tickled me on its way down. I was completely unable to restrain a large belch. He drained the entire glass without coming up for air once.
It was an astounding sight to see. And again I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me as his abdomen seemed to fill out like a billowing sail before my very eyes!
He concluded with a burp so unbelievably loud, I was certain the windows would shatter from the force. He lived well for a man who lived essentially alone.
Chef had prepared a sumptuous four-course dinner in the French style. It was too much for me, but I gladly gave portions I could not finish to Zeppelin.
It was a pleasure to watch the man eat. We retired to the drawing room after our great meal for cognac and cigars. The two of us chatted well into the night.
You see, my father was not a wealthy man. He wanted to see me succeed, but was barely able to raise money for my tuition.
It looked unlikely that I would ever get to go. The coach to Copenhagen and the boat from there to Hamburg would put enough of a dent in my pocketbook.
Just when I was on the cusp of giving up my dreams entirely, my best friend Bosse, who was a neighbor and practically like a brother to me, paid me a visit.
I have something to show you! The place was in a state of disrepair. He opened the rickety old doors. Inside lay what looked to be a set of bed sheets for a giant, but much-patched.
He went on a few test flights with it, but Mother made him give it up. This was my only open avenue. My mother was in tears, with the knowledge that she may not ever see me again.
With the help of his brother and a couple of farmhands, Bosse had inflated the balloon with hot air, collected by burning hay in an old tin barrel.
It was my job to look over our provisions and other such things and stoking the fire when required. Meanwhile Bosse piloted our craft as best he could.
Though he had never ascended in a fire balloon before, he was soon flying us like an expert, consulting maps to chart our course and using the sand-bags to guide us.
The sun was shining and the winds remained on a more or less southerly course, leading us easily in the direction we wished to go.
But one day, a large thunderstorm whipped up. The black clouds came upon us with appalling suddenness, and the strong easterly winds would have blown us far off course.
We were forced to land in an open field, somewhere north of the Thuringian city of Erfurt. We were greeted by a throng of curious farm-folk.
It seems news had travelled round about our journey, and our arrival had been expected. Rumours abounded about us. Some folk thought we were adventurers from Hamburg, bound on a round-the-world tour.
Others had heard we were Swedish, attempting to make some sort of political statement with our flight. I did my best to clear up any misconceptions.
To our great relief, the Schiller family, in whose property we landed, offered us hospitality until the weather cleared and we could fly again.
The next day, a certain Herr Beckert, a newspaper reporter, arrived from the city to interview us. He started off addressing me in Swedish as best he could, but I assured him the interview would go much more rapidly in German, rather than have me struggle through two layers of accents to comprehend what questions were being asked.
Two days after the interview, the weather finally cleared up enough for us to continue our journey. Our hosts and their neighbours assisted us in re-inflating the balloon, giving us fresh provisions and wished us well on the balance of our journey.
Our ascent took us directly over the city of Erfurt, where citizens waved and cheered as we carried on our southward course.
Bosse had learned quickly on our first leg, but had now truly grown into an expert in balloon flight, able to read the air currents like a hawk.
These last days of journey were an experience I would never forget. Crossing the mountains of Bohemia was breathtaking. I had never seen such natural beauty before.
When the shimmering Danube finally came into view, we knew our journey was nearing its end. As with our forced touchdown in Thuringia, news of our arrival preceded us.
Cheering throngs of people appeared in the streets as our balloon descended. Bosse used his new-found skills in piloting the balloon to dramatic effect, delaying our landing until we reached the center of the Wiener Stadtpark.
Watching Herr Zeppelin listen to the story was, for me, more enjoyable then telling it. He had unfastened the buttons of his dark brown waistcoat, which had grown tight due to the heavy meal he had just eaten.
His left hand moved in lazy circles on the surface of his vast belly, now in full view, cloaked in his snug, white shirt.
His right hand occasionally flicked ash from the big, thick cigar which he puff-puff-puffed on as he watched me intently with those warm, deep brown eyes of his.
When I reached the conclusion of my tale, he exploded with laughter, slapping the side of his puffy paunch for emphasis. Of course!
I remember reading about you in the papers! I should have remembered! So he commissioned a larger building to be constructed on the other side of town.
During its construction, he received news that there was some trouble down at the worksite, and he went down to investigate personally.
When Zeppelin arrived at the site, he saw a man covered in mud. It seems the foreman found his work to be substandard, and had dragged him through the mud as a form of punishment.
And who are you to call me on it, you great fat ox? Though shorter than the foreman, his confidence made him appear like a giant in comparison.
And I refuse to pay the bills for someone who treats his workers like this! The foreman was unceremoniously given his cards, and the man he had dragged through the mud was thereby promoted to be the new foreman.
Clearly he possessed an amazingly resonant chamber. It reminded me of a picture book I was given as a boy, about a small town that wanted to form its own orchestra, but was too poor to afford instruments, so they had to make do with what they had.
My favorite illustration, the one which reminded me of Zeppelin, was one depicting the fattest man in town, who beat his belly with mallets in lieu of a bass drum.
That image stuck with me as a child. And being with Herr Zeppelin now gave me the same feeling of happiness.
I find that highly unlikely! From that day on, our friendship proceeded with alarming swiftness. Soon he was not Herr Zeppelin to me, but Otto.
And I, Carl, to him. In October came the harvest festival. I was as busy as I had ever been, and had to temporarily hire a couple of extra hands to satisfy the demands for baked goods that the throngs of people would bring to the town.
I had a stand outdoors on the day of the fair. Never had I seen the town so busy. Today, I thought, surely would be a day to remember.
Little did I know just how memorable it would turn out to be, though! In a pavilion in the center of town, a band played. Considering the rotund fellows of Dickendorf, though, it was oddly appropriate.
I had to tip my hat to the musical director, he did a fine job of making sure the band had a full and layered sound, in spite of being so bottom-heavy.
Otto came to visit me at my stand, asking how business was going. I was certainly in no position to argue. He had grown still fatter over the months of our acquaintance; increasing from merely big to truly heroic proportions.
He was now the very image of Falstaff himself, a fantastically rotund fellow of legend. I like to think that I had a hand in his new, immense size.
The band concluded their number to a round of applause. Then Herr Eigenmann took the stage to give the introductory speech.
He was a very good public speaker, and it was a pleasure just to hear his voice. His chest seemed puffed with pride for this great occasion. He concluded with a rousing plea to let the celebration begin!
The audience applauded and the band started playing again. Beer began to flow and merriment began to spread. Then he appeared. I did not see his actual arrival, in a coach drawn by two large Belgian draft horses, but as others described it to me afterwards, they had painted it for me as though I were there.
I saw him approach my stand and I knew who he was immediately. He was taller even than I, and a good deal taller than Otto.
His round cheeks framed a bushy, walrus moustache. His robust frame was clothed in a heavy velvet coat, which was unable to hide his rotund figure.
He was large all over, it seemed that every part of his body had been blown up with a powerful air pump. He reached out a hand towards me, his fingers thick as sausages, and shook mine.
He ate them with utter relish, and it was a joy to watch him eat. He was eating so much so fast that a small crowd had gathered round him.
The fattest man around! Otto, meanwhile, was ready to explode in rage. His face had turned red with ire. He threw his hat down, stomped up to Hindenburg and nudged him with his belly.
Look at this belly! And I am the fattest man there ever was! Before I knew what had happened, I was trapped between two swollen paunches, buffeting me from either side as their owners bellowed boasts.
This is a festival! This is a jolly occasion! He had just arrived to see what the trouble was. He pointed at me.
But Eigenmann, whose presence was weightier than mine, was able to keep the two big men separated more effectively. We could put one man on each side, and whichever side it leans to, that man is the heavier man.
It seemed like the entirety of the festival was now focused on these two men. Herr Eigenmann acted as referee of sorts.
Otto was first, lowering himself gently onto the scale. The big dial spun nearly full circle, and Eigenmann examined it with precision, holding his monocle close to his eye.
Otto chuckled heartily, his big belly bouncing up and down. Again the dial whirled round like clock hands spinning out of control, pushing the scales to their absolute limit.
None of them had expected Hindenburg to be so huge. Groans of disappointment rose at last, as they realized their champion had been out-done.
Ever the showman, Otto raised his hands to quell the crowd. He removed his gloves and coat with stately dignity, and rolled his portly form back toward the scale.
No one could imagine what was to come next. You will learn there is more to me than meets the eye! He was breathing heavily. He thumped the palms of his hands against his belly, and remounted the scale's platform.
The crowd watched in amazement as suddenly, he began inhaling deeply and strongly, his broad, barrel chest expanding. Parents Guide.
