The film is not for everyone but if you like naturalistic acting and a gritty often dreary story you would be well served to track down this film.
It is a film of in-your-face close-ups and the aspect ratio was a perfect choice for this style. A wider frame would have diminished the intensity while adding nothing.
What Arnold does better than any director I can think of is her acting-for-the-camera direction of young actresses.
This was certainly true with the three children in "Wasp", who seemed to effortlessly give Arnold just the underplayed performances she needed.
In "Fish Tank" she gently guides Jarvis toward a performance full of gritty authenticity. And she scores again with Rebecca Griffith's tragicomic portrayal of little sister Tyler with lines as funny as they are poignant.
Griffith's character is especially important because at its core this is a story of free will vs destiny. And Mia must recognize her destiny if she is to change it.
This recognition comes with the death of the Irish Traveler horse symbolized by the chain and concrete block that once constrained it and with the realization that she and her "chip-off-the-same-block" younger sister are the same person at different stages; traveling the same road to an inevitable nothing.
This motivates her to break out of the rut into which she was born, a track where one is distracted by superficial false hopes from seeking real opportunity.
Her new road may end badly but she has nothing to lose. Another nicely directed naturalistic performance is turned in by Sydney Mary Nash as Keira.
Her scenes are probably the best in the film, they certainly were the most difficult. Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child. Sex scenes were too graphic.
Seriously, movies can be made without the gross dirty scenes. I think this movie is really good besides that.
It is really sad but true that parents really need to protect their kids against predictors like this. I Kno a few ppl who have gone thru this.

When I saw Michael Fassbender's name on it, I stayed up to watch it. It's one of the most interesting movies I have seen in a long time.
So coming-of-age, which is a term I've never really understood too well, but this seems to fit it nicely. I don't know who Katie Jarvis is, but her acting is brilliant.
Her anger, fear, hope, first love with an older man I had to order it on Amazon today just to re-watch and rewind parts I couldn't understand on TV.

Mind bogglingly vicious both verbally and sociologically, the world of single mothers, drug dealing and casual, often abusive, relationships be they parental, filial or otherwise, not to mention the ritual humiliation, tribalism and intense overcrowding.
The end scene screams out loudly to the dehumanising damage meeted out to people who actually know nothing different, nor were they ever given a chance to.
Truly visceral. No subtitles for the hearing impaired. While this isn't a great movie, it's nonetheless a rather interesting - and well-acted - film.
The story revolves around a teenage girl who seeks to make sense of, and engage with, the world around her. She resides in an urban slum, and occupies a flat with her single mother and young sister.
Depressed with life, this teenage girl dreams of making something of herself through dance - which she practices regularly. Her life is turned upside down by the man who starts dating her mother And, as the story unfolds, this becomes a coming-of-age tale involving sexual awakenings.
Throughout, the story is rather disheartening - and it presents a gritty and realistic portrayal of contemporary life.
In addition to the first-rate acting, the film is well-made. While it's a rather low budget affair, it's clear that the director has taken time and effort to offer viewers a nicely crafted movie.
Yet the film is somewhat dull and drawn-out, and doesn't quite live up to its potential as a critique of modern social life. While I'm glad I watched it, this isn't a film I'll be watching again.
Nonetheless, I do recommend this movie - so long as you are interested in the type of story I've outlined. Mia seems to have so much to offer the world but her circumstances are harsh - her mother has no visible affection for her.
We never learn about her father. She is trying to grapple with the strong emotions she is experiencing and trying to understand the world.
At the end of the film I really hope that she has a brighter future as she seems to have a lot of good qualities that just need the right environment to bring them out.
Katie Jarvis is outstanding! Highly recommended film-making. The film gives a realistic insight into the daily living of 'deprived community', perhaps giving a message to the society to take remedial action!
