Fragen und Antworten. One of the school's faculty reprimands Amber for not returning to school and grabs her by the arm to take her to the principal's office.
Joshua becomes upset with how aggressive the teacher is, pulling at her arm, and shouts at him to give her a break and pick on someone his own size.
Joshua climbs the fence and pulls Amber from the teacher's grip only to be confronted by two boys - one of them her brother Ryan, who thinks she's being harassed.
Joshua punches Ryan, who then punches back. Joshua runs off, climbs the fence and shouts back he's sorry to the girl. When it starts to rain, he hides in a culvert but gets caught in the flowing water.
Joshua walks along the rocky coastline and happens upon a large sea-side mansion and finding a side door that's been left open, 'breaks' in. He showers, cleans up his cut and now starving, makes himself a large sandwich.
While exploring the mansion, he finds an art studio with a painting that is half complete being copied from a photo and finishes it before falling asleep.
When he awakens he's confronted by the police and taken to child services. He tells the social worker that he doesn't know where his mother is.
Back at the mansion, the owner, Everly Alfred Molina , finds the now-finished painting and believes the boy has real talent since he had been unable to find anyone to complete the portrait, let alone do it with such complete accuracy.
Everly decides to take in the boy thinking that he might be able to exploit his art talent. While eating breakfast one morning, Everly gives Joshua an expensive fountain pen as a gift and the two talk about art.
Joshua, knowing little on the history of art, jokingly tells Everly that his favorite artist is Hank Ketcham , the creator of Dennis the Menace.
He also meets Ryan, Amber's brother, and the two apologize to each other about what had gone down at the school yard the other day. Ryan says Amber told him the full story of what happened and thanks Joshua for looking out for his sister.
The two talk about Anne-Marie and how she's indeed cool but also loaded. That night, Joshua breaks into Anne-Marie's home but is unsure of why he does.
He begins to go through some of her things and finds a leather-thong necklace with a small vial filled with something that he later finds out to be cyanide which he pilfers, as well as a picture of an unknown man.
Anne-Marie discovers Joshua in the room and asks him what he is doing. He asks who the man is in the photograph.
She tells him it is an artist named George and nothing more. She then calls Everly to come and collect him. The next day Joshua and Amber talk on the beach.
When Amber asks what she could do to repay him, he states that she could give him a kiss. She laughs it off and races him down the beach but drops her keys in an effort to win.
She beats him and while trying to get her keys back from him, he kisses her without warning. She pushes him off, demands for him to give her the keys before leaving him on the beach.
There he finds a large black dog and learns that it is Anne-Marie's dog Matilda. He takes Matilda home to Anne-Marie and the two of them talk over a bowl of soup.
Meanwhile, Vanessa continues her search to find Joshua's mother and learns that she may be living with her boyfriend. Joshua goes to Amber's and gives her a portrait of her that he had drawn.

The whole genre of Holocaust literature inspires horror and revulsion for the Nazis, disgust for the collaborating and enabling Germans and great sympathy for the Jews and other victims of the vile policies of Hitler if not for his entirely morally-bankrupt enablers and admirers, Henry Ford, Lady Nancy Astor and Joseph Kennedy amongst them.
Cioma is a cheeky chappy who will always find a way around any situation and thoroughly enjoys outwitting those who would have him deported to the camps and gassed.
But he can't do this alone and through him we see a whole network of Jews living a sort of underlife in the cities.
This underlife was enabled by right-thinking Germans who weren't necessarily heroes of the resistance but neither were they going to see people murdered for some evil, invented political propaganda that was being touted as truth.
And if they wanted a nice lamp from the house, well, that's how people are. Your life for a lamp! Much, much more than a fair exchange. Not all of them were selfless, but all of them were heroes.
What Cioma did was alter genuine documents from the original German owners to the new Jewish ones. Some of the documents at least came from Christians in a particular church who would drop them as offerings at the end of the Sunday service.
It was no risk to them, they just went to the local Post Office and said they'd lost them. But to the Jews, they were the diffence between being stopped on the street and sent to the camps and being nodded on, with a smile, to go about their daily business.
Cioma spends years hot-bedding, having affairs, living an underground life, very precarious but plenty of joy interspersed with the every-present worry of deportation and death in the camps.
Eventually though, Cioma cycles and then swims to freedom across a freezing lake to Switzerland, where he lived, working as a graphic artist until his death in Alev HaShalom, RIP, Cioma, without your book, I'd never have known that there were Jews throughout the Nazi period who never got sent to the camps, nor the Germans who helped them live this life.

The author was very young in Germany when Hitler came to power. As a Jew, he had first-hand knowledge of how his family and friends were threatened, constricted and placed in camps by the Third Reich.
He was one of the fortunate ones for many reasons, which he describes. His work camp was not one of the worst.
His mistakes were not fatal. Do that. Report that the card is lost. Schönhaus has a conversational style that makes it easy to accept his life story and all the challenging things that happen to him.
It reads much like a first-person thriller complete with surprises, narrow escapes and growing-up experiences. Just like his journey from adolescence into adulthood, his experiences affect his actions and his observations and his personality expands concurrently.
He is an only child and his parents dote on him. His father offers him life-affirming advice which he retains and tries to apply. This is augmented at intervals by other adults he meets or works with.
Morality is for people living an orderly life. Of course, there are people who would stick to the straight and narrow even in hell itself.
But they are the exceptions. And once there was no longer any distinction between Christians and Jews, anti-Semitism would automatically vanish.
He is more lucky than careful but eventually escapes himself and lives in his adopted country until his death in This is a book that will entertain and enlighten with its details of life in Berlin during the Nazi era.

He risked his life and those who collaborated with him to Definitely not your typical Holocaust survival book which is, more often than not, an emotional and heartbreaking account of inhumane treatment and tragic loss of family and friends.
He risked his life and those who collaborated with him to procure the materials necessary to replicate quality documents that allowed safe passage and escape from the Nazis in Berlin.
The writer has a very witty and clever personality and his exploits, while extremely dangerous, are recounted with such flair and intrigue that you admire him all the more for the things he did.
Even when placed on the Gestapo's most wanted list, the author was quick enough on his feet to talk his way out of arrest as well as speak out and defend other Jewish people whom he witnessed being harassed by the Gestapo.
The way of life for those who lived in Berlin is portrayed with an insight that is not written about as often. Here is the author's preface to his memoir, which is what convinced me to read the book: "My survival is the result of events in which the 'law of large numbers' played the major part.
If the parquet floor of a large room had a hole in it the size of a fist, and somebody tried to land a pea in this hole, his chances of success would be minimal.
But if you took a sackful of peas and tipped them out on the floor, the hole would be filled immediately. Like mine, the story of every pea that ended up in the hole would then consist of a series of miraculous coincidences.
I an one of those lucky peas. Instead, he relays with joy the encounters he had where he was able to outsmart the Nazis and carry out his work to secure safe passage for others, just days and hours away from being deport to a concentration camp.
When finally forced to flee Berlin and bicycle to Switzerland, his journey is successful due to one lucky coincidence after another.
A great example of someone with a heart of gold, nerves of steel and tenacity to never stop when doing what's right or what is necessary to help others.
May 07, Karen rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fiction. This is not the greatest work of literature, but, boy, is it a great story. The writing kind of jumps around, and it's not always very clear when one scene changes to the next, but the tale of this young man hiding out in Berlin and forging documents is fascinating.
He takes crazy risks but always manages to be elsewhere when they're looking for him, and finally makes his way into Switzerland, stopping on the way to forge one last document.
Jan 20, Kris Sellgren rated it it was amazing. This riveting memoir was like reading a spy novel with constant action and clever avoidance of the Nazis.
Once he went completely underground in Berlin, he began forging ID papers for Jews and others who were also hiding from the Nazis. Finally he realized relying on luck was not smart and he fled to Switzerland.
His account is illustrated by his own sketches, not expert but vivid. View 1 comment. As some other reviews have pointed out, the prose is choppy and at times rough, additionally the tone seems a bit strange.
It is unclear, at least to this reader, if it is the translation or the author the tone being a way to distance himself.
Regardless, it is still a rather good and engrossing read. Schonhaus was the child of Russian Jews who had emigrated to Berlin.

The story starts during , and covers the experience of Schonhaus as he hids at in Berlin, escaping the deportations that took the rest of his family.
Schonhaus was able to forge passes and other docuements, making not only a person who was saved, but a person who did the saving. While he was helped several times, he saved himself by taking risks and sticking to his guns.
During his time in Berlin and working with the German Resistance, Schonhaus knows several individuals who will be well known to students of World War II history.
A good read simplely because of the view it presents. Jan 13, Sana rated it it was amazing.
She smiles and comments that it looks good and invites him to sit with her.
Joshua apologizes for what he did at the beach and that he was foolish for kissing her like that. She tells him that it was the worst kiss she had ever experienced and teaches him how to "properly" kiss a girl.
Meanwhile, Everly has sold the painting that Joshua had completed earlier but needs to complete a Winslow Homer in just a couple of weeks or lose his art galleries along with everything he owns.
He decides to take a risk and use the boy seeing as he is the only one who could complete the portrait accurately and on time. Joshua attends a party that Amber is throwing and sees her in the arms of another guy, who happens to be her cousin.
He grows jealous and follows them in the house and is about to confront him but he is held back by Ryan. Joshua and Ryan fight, resulting in Joshua hitting Ryan with a pool ball.
Joshua goes to Anne-Marie's where she tends to his wounds. She tells him that just seeing something won't give you the truth, that you sometimes have to look at something in a different light.
She then asks if he would like to live with her. He tells her that he would have to think about it. Everly gives him a different proposition: If he does one more painting he will get half the money made from it - a possibility of millions.
Joshua, amazed, says yes. For a week he learns what forgers have to do so their paintings pass as authentic. When the painting is finished, Joshua and Everly have an unpleasant conversation.
Joshua, having second thoughts, then takes the painting from the house and hides it. Meanwhile, Vanessa finds Joshua's mother living with her boyfriend and a child.
Vanessa then calls child protective services to rescue the child. She goes back to her office and takes a closer look at Joshua's file and learns that he has been abused by his mother.
She discovers that Anne-Marie wants to become Joshua's permanent guardian. She learns how Anne-Marie had been questioned by the police and fell under suspicion of forgery.
Vanessa also learns that Anne-Marie lost her family in a house fire and was unable to save her only surviving daughter.
