There are numerous montages, such as the honeymoon, which could have easily been shortened to make a single, stronger movie. The film had very little plot too; it's basically about a complicated pregnancy that just happened to feature vampires and werewolves.
There is a melodramatic tone throughout, amplified by the music, whether it was the piano-heavy soft moments, the epic score often played over non-epic moments , or the emo rock songs.
A little melodrama is fine, but it goes on for most of the movie, and when there is little hook of a story, it just becomes a drag.
Even people who are fans to the series will admit that dialogue has never been its strong suit. Bill Condon attempts to make the sex scene and honeymoon to be tender, but it came off more sappy and overbearing.
Stewart certainly gives it a good go and Lautner gives what is a half-way decent performance. Pattinson was slumming it, but with some of the cheesy dialogue he has to say, even someone like Laurence Olivier would have struggled.
Condon does have a few moments of visual darkness, including the dream sequence in the beginning with its juxtaposition of bright white clothing and blood and Bella and Edward standing on top of a load of corpses.
The birth scene was actually intense and gory. But these are counter-balanced with goofy moments, one of the most infamous being a psychic werewolf argument.
The whole wedding sequence and honeymoon plays like a young girl's fantasy, sort of idealistic. This is fine, but hardly dramatic and not likely to have wide appeal.
Previous "Twilight" movies have had some interesting side issues that could and should have been explored.
This is not the case with "Part 1. There is nothing like that. The few themes there are include a look into Edward's past, a brief debate about abortion and the idea of imprinting, which is basically brainwashing.
A better idea could be looking at somebody forcing someone else to love them. That would be a dark story.

I now feel the whole thing was paced pretty well, besides one part that may be obvious to fans of the book, which was Bella driving her Merc I don't think anything was missed or messed up.
The characters are convincing as always, story I loved anyway and has been translated well to film. This film for me shows Kristen Stewart's dedication to the role and I really can't fault anything with the movie.
Effects are very well done. The Blu Ray picture and sound quality are both perfect. The most disappointing thing for me was how long it took to come through my letter box, but that's got nothing to do with the film.
The whole experience is a little bitter sweet, because I loved the story so much, know it's almost all finished and will have to wait the coming months to see how the finale turns out, but hopefully it'll be as good as all of the current four releases have been.
An excellent story, great movie, whether you like twilight or good films in general. Well worth multiple viewings IMO. I've just seen part 1 last night at the midnight showing at my local pictures and it was absolutely brilliant!
The film producers have done the book justice and stuck with the book's telling rather than veering off and adding bits in that were not in the book.
They have also put a lot of content from the book in without exactly explaining it all so I would imagine if anyone hasn't read the book that some parts may be missed on them so my advice would be if you haven't read the book to please try and take the time out to read it as it is absolutely fantastic and obviously goes into more detail than the film producers would be able to in the short time of the two films.
The film starts off with the invites to Bella and Edwards wedding going out with Jacob obviously not taking the news well and we see him running out of his house and changing into wolf form to take off upset.
The film then progresses onto the wedding and both Bella and Edward look stunning. There is also a little cameo appearance from the author of the books Stephenie Meyer as she appears in the wedding crowd as one of the guests so try and watch out for her if you can.
The happy couple then go off on their honeymoon to Isle Esme an island that Carlisle bought for Esme for her wedding present from him when they were married which the film briefly mentions but doesn't totally explain and they is a bedroom scene with breaking of the bed involved.
I don't want to ruin the film with any spoilers for anyone who hasn't read the book but from this point on the honeymoon takes a bit of a dip and the couple end up having to cut their honeymoon short and return home.
As a massive fan of the book I was really pleased with the film and they way the film producers have kept true to the book.
There are also lots of humorous moments in the film with some of the wedding speeches actually making everyone in the pictures laugh last night.
The background music was beautiful with quite a few of the previous film's tracks in this one such as Bella's Lullaby. The film also finished on what I would say was a good 'middle' point of the book.
I can't wait for part 2 and have just pre-ordered part 1's DVD to go with the rest of them. Brilliant and a definite must watch for all Twilight Fans.
