Please try again later. For the first time, a disappointing entry in the MCU. Brie Larson spends the whole bloody film walking around with her fists clenched, and delivers a completely unmemorable performance that has more than a few cringe-worthy moments.
With a better lead actress, this could've been a great movie. As it was, Ms Larson was simply not up to the task, delivering a lacklustre performance as an entirely forgettable heroine.
The rest of the cast does a good job, but with a weak lead the movie simply falls short of what it should have been.
Also, the decision to make this a "feminist" movie was a bad one that brought on a number of terrible, awkward lines in the film that were obviously added solely to point out how "empowered" Captain Marvel was.
To paraphrase Tywin Lannister: Anyone who needs to constantly remind others how powerful they are is not powerful in the least. Near the end of the movie there is a scene where the protagonist informs her antagonist that she has nothing to prove to him.
Perhaps; however that statement rings hollow in light of the fact that her opponent is correct, and that while Captain Marvel has managed to access her full powers and is now easily able to overpower her foe through brute force, doing so is effectively a crutch to save her from her own impetuosity.
Which is curious because every other MCU hero to date has been forced to fight either without their powers or against an obviously stronger foe in order to find their true strength Iron Man defeated Aldrich Killian without his armor; Thor couldn't defeat Hela and had to allow Surtur to destroy Asgard in order to stop her; Black Panther was forced to fight without powers and lost, but later won the rematch with equal power levels I could go on, but at the end of the day this movie fails for two reasons: poor choice of lead actress, and the studio tried too hard to make this movie politically correct.
A better actress could have masked weaknesses in the story, or a better story might have been easier for Ms Larson to convincingly depict.
Unfortunately neither was the case, resulting in a movie that is disappointing at best. Focus on making a great movie and leave the politics out of it.

Jackson is seen using a device to call Captain Marvel for help. So this is the origin story of Captain Marvel.
It turns out she was once a crack Air Force jet pilot. As usual, I will give a disclaimer about my Marvel geeknous. I have none. The film opens on the planet Hala occupied by the blue-blooded literally Kree.
It is clear that the Kree have some seriously good fighting skills, but Yon-Rogg keeps telling Vers to control her emotions before launching some of her more serious weapons, especially fiery blasts from her fists.
In what seems to be a well-placed and recurring attack on the emotional stability of women, we are sure to see more.
Vers keeps having nightmares and dreams often involving a woman of mystery called Supreme Intelligence in the credits played by year old Annette Bening who also fills out her uniform nicely not a sexist comment.
Vers has memory intrusions as well of living another life in another world. Vers gets separated and gets to Earth first, right through the roof of a Blockbusters Video and next door to a Radio Shack.
Works well with Jackson in particular who is in a lot of scenes. The scenes with Vers and Fury are witty enough to make the film watchable alone.
A third wheel is a house cat called Goose who is likely to be remembered as much as the lead actors. As time goes by, Vers's memory begins to come back.
The two flew together and Vers discovers her real name is Carol Danvers. As Carol more memories return including interaction with a scientist named Wendy Lawson who looks a lot like Bening.
To be honest, this film closely follows the set up established for all of the Marvel films by Kevin Feige. What is remarkable is that Captain Marvel slides right in there without a hiccup.
The film is fun, flashy, exciting and entertaining. Larson is perfect in her role. And Brie Larson is Captain Marvel!
Some reviewers said that the movie started off slow for them, not for me. I was interested in how they were going to unfold her origin story as well as seeing what their take was on how she got her powers.
I thought it was well done. I enjoyed the movie from beginning to end.
