I liked the movie because there is so much truth to be told about society. I suspect there are many children whom are treated the same way these children are treated and no one knows about them.
Society doesn't care about anything or anyone except for the preservation of its own disease that society refuses to offer a cure for.
This movie doesn't offer any graphic details about incest, but does make comments. Its not the incest that is so sick about the movie, its the poisons that they give it's own children to kill them to preserve what the family or "mother" wanted so selfishly.
Like the American Dream its people are only interested in self indulgence and provides no cures for the poor and weak of it populous.
For its the poor and weak that can potentially save the world and become its salvation just like the brave children in this movie.

I've seen the new version and sorry but the acting in this is much better. There's a few bits that have been changed but overall the actors do a brilliant job.

Bought as a present. Not a bad film but not as good as the book. Flowers in the attic is the story of four children who are confined to an attic and abandoned by their mother.
While fending for themselves they realise they have to take desperate measures to escape. I have never personally read the novel,but the movie which is disguised as a horror by the trailer is quite downbeat and depressing.

The Devil All the Time. I didn't find myself rooting for her. There was so little interaction between her and her mother, which was something pretty important in the book - as she grew up the mother got increasingly threatened by her beauty and her relationship with the twins and Christopher.
This movie rushed through admittedly many plot points and it was hard to tell what anyone's motivation was. Why did the mom leave them up there so long?
Yes she was enjoying her time as a free, single, wealthy woman, but it was never totally clear why she left them and spoiler alert tried to kill them.
Why was the grandmother so alternatingly mean and also sympathetic? I think Ellyn Burstyn oversold the sympathetic parts. Definitely chewed the scenery.
Heather Graham definitely looked more like the mother I pictured in the book but she was so clearly phoning it in. You signed up for a Lifetime remake of a terrible YA novel from the 70s.
I get it. But at least make it interesting. I watched it for the novelty of it but I hope some day someone makes a more interesting version of this story.
This definitely didn't do anyone justice. I'm usually okay with movies taking liberties with the books, but this is just ridiculous. Foxworth Hall is supposed to be a huge, lavishly furnished mansion, not Miss Havisham's house.
Seriously, did Lifetime find an abandoned asylum or something? And the attic is supposed to be an entire floor with nooks and crannies stuffed with treasures from the centuries, not a tiny little room.
The actress who played the Grandmother was abysmal. Louise Fletcher captured her much better in the original film. This whole film seemed very rushed and is proof that you lose every time when you cheap out with props and setting.
As made-for-TV-eque as the first movie was, I really had high hopes for this updated version, figuring that certainly with the star power of Ellen Burstyn, it had to be a cut above the original not that Louise Fletcher and Victoria Tennant were in any way lacking.
Boy was I wrong. This movie is so amateurish, I can't even believe it was produced under the Lifetime banner. It's like the Cliff's Notes version of the original movie not even the book.
The casting was so far off, it wasn't even in the right ballpark; the acting with the obvious exception of Ms. Burstyn was about as authentic as a high school production; the two youngest children didn't even appear to be professional actors.
Even the house itself seemed to be miscast; the mansion in the original was at least more befitting V. Andrews' description as "one of the grandest homes in Virginia".
The script read like a badly-edited version of the original screenplay; the story itself was nearly non-existent, stripped bare of nearly all detail, backstory, and nuance.
It felt like the second radio headline version of The Gettysburg Address. The only thing -- and I mean the ONLY thing -- they got right was the grandmother's wig; unlike the hair and makeup of Louise Fletcher in the '80s original, Ellen Burstyn sported a wig of the exact style that a something-year-old woman who came of age in the early s and was in her prime in the s would have been wearing in I was so looking forward to watching this - I really loved the 80's version, but thought it punked out by not involving the incest material from the book, which was, after all, why everyone read it!
I'm sure they could have found ONE really blonde young actress who could have played the role.
